How to Apply and get a Chinese Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship is a big thing currently.
I am writing this from China, where I am currently on a student visa completing my Master’s program. In the process of navigating this system myself, I have seen what works, what does not, and what most students simply do not know exists.
In this article, you’ll learn about Chinese Bachelor’s scholarships in context to who qualifies, what is available, what it realistically costs you, and how the whole process works from your country to your future Chinese university campus.
For students interested in language programmes as an entry point into China, read our Chinese Language Programme guide here. For those with a degree already looking at Master’s scholarships, read our Master’s guide here.
Why China for a Bachelor’s Degree?
Let me put something in perspective first.
I am sure you already know, but let me still put it out: Nigerians spend between ₦30 million and ₦50 million chasing Tier-1 country visas like the UK, Canada, US and a few top Schengen regions. Imagine the huge agent fees, application fees and visa fees, and the emotional pain of being turned down repeatedly by embassy officers who owe you no explanation.
China offers a completely different equation. A Bachelor’s degree at many Chinese universities, a chance to be fully or partially sponsored to study and a straightforward process to apply directly to the university through a verified platform.
Scholarship Options for Bachelor’s Students
There are three tiers that have some margins that prove your success rate, which include your age and academic background as a determinant to which you are most likely to qualify for.
Full Scholarship with Monthly Stipend
This tier of Chinese Bachelor scholarship has your Tuition, accommodation, and a monthly living allowance all covered.
This is actually the best package, and trust me, it exists. However, it is the most competitive tier with the best in class from all over the world competing.
Your best chance of landing this is if you are under 25 and have a strong secondary school result, a good foundation certificate, or an excellent HSK result as an Addition.
Chinese Universities want young, promising students for their full packages, and if your profile fits, your chances are genuinely strong.
Half Scholarship (Partial)
The Chinese bachelor’s Half (Partial) scholarship covers half of the school tuition, as you pay the remaining half, and covers the rest of the fees like the dormitory fees, medical insurance, visa, and textbooks.
Actually, this is realistic for candidates who are aged roughly from 26 to 35, or those with average academic records.
As financially input as it may seem, the total is still far below what any Western university would cost and far below what most people spend on visa rejections alone.
Self-Financed (Full Fees, No Scholarship)
In this case, you pay everything yourself. Self-financed students can typically live off-campus, choose their own accommodation, and operate with significantly more independence than those under scholarship of any kind in some places where accommodation is strictly ON-CAMPUS.
Normally, if you have the funds and lifestyle requirements matter to you, this is worth knowing about.

What Does a Half Scholarship Actually Cost in Practice?
In the case of a Chinese Half Scholarship, the student typically pays half of the School fees. If this sounds vague, then below is a breakdown of the real numbers involved.
On a half scholarship, the university covers 50% of tuition, whilst you cover:
- The remaining 50% of tuition (Although this varies by university and programme, which is generally very affordable by international standards)
- Dormitory fees
- Medical, Visa and insurance
- Study materials
Realistically, adding all of these costs together, the total annual cost is a fraction of what a self-funded degree in the UK, Most Schengen Zones, Canada, or the US would cost.
I have first-hand seen students manage this for well under what most people would consider a serious amount of money, especially when you add all your living costs in China, which can be low.
Conservatively, you can spend less than ₦150,000 a month on food, transport, and daily living in China. And I’m being for real.
Age Matters
Unfortunately, everything can’t be too rosy, and this is something most agents will not tell you clearly, so I will.
Under 25:
In search of a Chinese bachelor’s scholarship, you are in the best position for full scholarships, even with stipends, if you are in their favourite age bracket, which ranges from 18 to 25.
Most Chinese universities are actively looking for young, promising international students, and the full packages are designed with this demographic in mind. If you have your regional school results and are applying straight from secondary school or just after, your chances are strong.
26 to 35:
Full scholarships with stipends become harder to land, but are not impossible and not easily possible at the same time.
Half scholarships and self-financed options are more realistic, and there are still very good universities and programmes available. Do not let age discourage you — just come in with accurate expectations.
Above 35:
Somewhat Possible, but the scholarship options become extremely narrow.
In cases like this, the Chinese language programme route may actually be a smarter entry point just to get into China, build your HSK score from there and apply for better scholarships from inside the country. Read our language programme guide here for that pathway.

Life as a Bachelor’s Student in China
Studying in China is a different Vibe and experience which layers on different study levels, ranging from the Chinese language Programme, the bachelor’s and the postgraduate Master’s Degree. In the Case of the Chinese Bachelor’s Degree program, below are some Realities you might face.
The classroom reality:
Whilst studying the Chinese Bachelor’s Degree, you will be in classes with students from across Asia, Africa, and beyond.
The academic environment is structured, and attendance is taken seriously as the Chinese educational background is built on Schools having rules and making sure it is duly obeyed.
No matter how hot or cool-headed you may be, you literally have no choice but to follow them to keep your visa valid and your scholarship intact.
The dormitory situation:
Most Chinese Bachelor Programme scholarship students are mandated to live in the school dormitory.
I will be honest, I came from living alone in Lagos for years and had to adjust to sharing a room with other people.
It is manageable, but it is something to mentally prepare for.
Although some universities are more flexible than others, which gives students freedom to live outside, even if the dormitory is not full.
This is one of the things we specifically check when selecting universities for our students, so you know what you are walking into before you book your flight.
And of course, if you don’t want anything, you can always find one that suits you. There are hundreds of Schools in China; it’s a Big world.
Social life:
Socially? Nah! Chinese people are welcoming. In smaller cities and provinces, they may stare vigorously at you, but believe me, it is not out of hostility or racism, but because many have genuinely never seen a dark-skinned person before.
Once you say a few words in Chinese, the whole dynamic shifts.
The curiosity turns into warmth very quickly. And they will make you feel like a celebrity with their Picture and Video Requests with you.
Some even call their friends and family on video call just to say hello out of excitement.
Business opportunities:
Unfortunately, you cannot officially work in China on a student visa. But during holidays, students travel to business hubs like Guangzhou to explore markets, visit factories, and make connections or business deals on behalf of their customers.
The golden rule:
There’s one thing you should never compromise, and that’s your student visa; it is your most valuable possession here. Protect it. Attend your classes. Pass your exams.
The Africans you hear about sleeping in hotel corridors in Guangzhou with no papers are sometimes a result of what happens when people do not take the visa seriously.
With a valid student visa and a genuine commitment to your studies, you have full peace of mind for your entire stay, which no other type of visa here in china has fewer chances of giving you.
